Friends Of Ours by robyn Bevan

As a blogger who lives only a stones-throw away from the heart of East London, you’d probably assume that I’m spoilt for choice when it comes to finding forward-thinking brunch joints. Truth-be-told, I keep coming back to only a handful of spots that fully satiate my tastebuds every time.  Not to worry though, all you have to do is watch this space as I’ll be covering all of these spots on FYI Robyn.

First on the list is none other than Friends Of Ours, a cosy independent café on Pitfield Street. Friends Of Ours is a short 5 minute stroll from both Hoxton & Old Street stations and, unlike most spots in this city, they serve brunch all day 7 days a week! The café is small and is tucked behind Old Street, but hard to miss this time of the year as there is nearly always a bunch of people sat outside on the long wooden benches, getting their fix of speciality coffee and antipodean brunches with an Asian twist. Don’t let the fact that they are busy put you off though – the café runs a tight ship and I’ve never waited too long to be seated.

It’s hard to get bored of the menu at Friends of Ours with it changing constantly. With that being said, they always make sure to have their version of your classic egg dishes on top of the more inventive brunch dishes.

This time around my boyfriend and I arrived to a whole new menu…  In my indecisive, hungover state I was initially heart-broken as I had my heart set on the comforting Sweet Potato & Kimchi Hash I had last time. This moment was short-lived. The new menu was packed with a diverse mix of quirky brunch selections.

With so many amazing options on the menu, it was really hard to choose what we wanted. After telling our waiter “just another minute” for the 5th time – we went for the Crispy Pork Tacos and the Courgette, Quinoa & Roasted Corn Fritters.

The taco’s were unbelievable. I’d even go as far as saying that they were the best tacos I’ve ever had! The combination of the tender, twice-cooked pork belly, folded scrambled-egg and barbecued pineapple was, melt-in-your-mouth, brunch heaven. Despite how good they tasted, they weren’t the most filling dish. If you get them, be prepared for a light brunch or be happy knowing you’ll have some room for one of their sweeter dishes.

In contrast and whilst not as tasty as the taco’s, the fritters were the perfect choice for someone looking for a healthy yet interesting take on a traditional brunch dish. The fritters were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and were served with a perfectly poached egg, tangy romesco sauce and, because it wouldn’t be brunch without it, smashed avo.

Whilst I can’t promise that these delicious dishes will be on the menu when you decide to visit Friends Of Ours – there’s no doubt that something of the same calibre will be!

The dishes are reasonably priced – around your average cost for a London brunch (so roughly a tenner a dish).  As for the portion sizes, it really depends on what you go for. Don’t let this dishearten you though as the staff are super helpful and can advise you on this!

Post-brunch I’d recommend a short stroll up Pitfield Street, you’ll find some cute shops along the way and it’s the perfect way to kick off a day hanging out in Shoreditch.
